Signs Of Eating Disorders

However, some people develop eating disorders characterized by binge eating or restricted food intake. This disorder can affect anyone of age or gender. It can occur due to a serious physical or mental issue that affects your eating habits. If not addressed, this disorder can impact your life or even lead to death. A dentist can detect signs of a potential eating disorder. Here are signs they can consider:

Teeth Erosion

Vomiting is a common issue among people with eating disorders. During vomiting, you expose your teeth to high acid, which causes tooth erosion. Frequent encounters with acid erode your teeth' enamel. People with bulimia nervosa likely have rounded-short teeth.

Increased Cavities

Healthy eating supplies your body with the right nutrients for enhancing your body cells. Proper nutrition can save you from tooth cavities. Eating disorders, which involve restricted eating habits, cause nutritional deficiencies. You will likely miss essential vitamins and calcium essential for your teeth' strength and health. As a result, weak teeth increase your risk of tooth decay and cavities.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a norm for people with anorexia. Restricted eating means that the salivary glands will have reduced activities. You will have low salivary production, leading to dry mouth problems. A dry mouth will cause discomfort, painful swallowing, and the prevalence of oral infections. A dentist can assess these aspects and conclude that your dry mouth is connected to eating disorders.

Gum Diseases

Nutrients such as iron, calcium, and vitamins promote your oral health. When you have anorexia, your body will have insufficient calcium and vitamin B & C. These nutrients play a role in your gum health. Their deficiency can lead to sores and inflammation of your gums, which are symptoms of gingivitis.

Your dental issues may not be due to poor oral hygiene. Eating disorders can increase their possibility. Contact one of our dentists for advice if you are struggling with eating disorders.
