I Have Sores In the Corner of My Mouth. How Can I Get Rid of Them?
Posted on 7/1/2024 by Sola Smile Co
Do you get sores in the corner of your mouth? You may assume you have cold sores, and you might even try treating them with over-the-counter medication. However, what you may have instead is angular cheilitis. Here is some information about angular cheilitis, what you need to do to treat those sores, and when you need to give our dental office a call.
What Is Angular Cheilitis?
The name of the sores in the corner of the mouth may be hard to pronounce, but the sores themselves are easy to describe. Sores caused by angular cheilitis always happen at the corners of your mouth. You may have sores in one or both corners of your mouth. These sores can become quite painful and may make it hard for you to open or close your mouth. The sores can look like scabs, a small cut, or even blistered and red.
The Differences Between Angular Cheilitis and Cold Sores
While angular cheilitis and cold sores look the same, they are actually two different issues. Angular cheilitis always occurs at the corners of your mouth, and it is not contagious. Cold sores appear close to the lip line, and they are contagious. Cold sores also follow the same pattern each time they occur. They begin with a tingling sensation where the cold sore will emerge. Then small, fluid-filled blisters occur, which ooze and then scab over. Angular cheilitis also may have blisters, but they usually do not ooze. Sores caused by angular cheilitis can also become red and swollen.
How Can I Treat Angular Cheilitis?
You can try treating angular cheilitis yourself by changing your diet. Be sure you eat foods with lots of iron, protein, and B vitamins, which can help heal the sores. You may also want to apply B vitamin oil to the area. Avoid citrus and spicy foods, which can make your angular cheilitis worse. If you cannot cure the sores, it is time to give our office a call so that we can make you an appointment with our dentist. You may need antibiotics or antifungal cream to help get rid of your angular cheilitis.
