What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental concern requires urgent attention, but some situations genuinely cannot wait.

A dental emergency is any condition involving severe pain, active infection, significant bleeding, or trauma to the teeth or jaw. When in doubt, call us, and we'll help you determine whether you need to come in right away.

Situations that typically qualify as dental emergencies include:

•  Toothaches that are severe or worsening
•  A tooth that has been knocked out or partially dislodged
•  Cracked, fractured, or broken teeth
•  A lost or damaged crown or filling that exposes the tooth
•  Dental abscesses or signs of infection, such as swelling or fever
•  Soft tissue injuries causing persistent bleeding

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Our Austin team is equipped to handle a wide range of urgent dental situations on the same day you call. Whether you're dealing with an abscess that has been building for days or a tooth that was just knocked loose, we prioritize getting you seen quickly.

Among the most frequent cases we treat are severe toothaches caused by decay or infection, broken or chipped teeth resulting from accidents or biting down on something hard, and lost restorations that leave a tooth vulnerable and sensitive.

We also perform emergency tooth extraction in Austin when a tooth is too damaged or infected to save and removal is the safest path forward. In those cases, we discuss your options for restoring the space, such as an implant or bridge, so you leave with a clear plan.

What to Do Before You Reach Our Austin Office

Taking the right steps before your appointment can protect your tooth and reduce discomfort while you're on your way to us.

Knocked-Out Tooth

For a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently with water and try to reinsert it into the socket, or keep it between your cheek and gum. Time is critical — getting to our office within 30 to 60 minutes gives the tooth the best chance of being saved.

Broken or Cracked Tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and avoid chewing on that side.

Lost Crown or Filling

Cover the exposed tooth with a small piece of sugar-free gum or over-the-counter dental cement until you can see us.

Dental Abscess

If you have a tooth abscess, do not try to drain it. Rinse with warm salt water to reduce bacteria and call us immediately, as infections can spread quickly.

Why Waiting Can Make a Dental Emergency Worse

It's tempting to hope a dental problem will resolve on its own, especially if the pain comes and goes. Unfortunately, most dental emergencies worsen the longer they go untreated.

An infection that starts in a single tooth can spread to surrounding bone, neighboring teeth, and, in serious cases, other areas of the body. A crack that feels minor today can deepen under the pressure of normal chewing until the tooth is no longer restorable.

Acting quickly doesn't just relieve pain faster.

It also preserves more of your natural tooth structure, reduces the complexity and cost of treatment, and lowers the risk of complications that could affect your overall health. Urgent dental care in Austin is available at our office because we understand that every hour counts when something goes wrong.
